La Porte Horloge, 14500 Vire, VIRE, FRANCE
The Clock Gate (Porte Horloge) is a 13th century fortified gate flanked by two towers and surmounted by a belfry with a pinnacle. It was the primary gateway to the city in the Middle Ages, when it was fortified.
The fortification in Vire was strengthened by William I the Conqueror. A double enclosure castle and dungeon, of which remain only the ruins of the tower, was built by Henry I Beauclerc.
